Topic:   Any column search function

By: ThomasPosted on: Dec 4 2018 at 06:33:48 AM
Just finished our trial of v5 including MySQL transfer. All looks good, including a massive speed increase when switching from Jet on the NAS drive, to the MySQL server.
Only thing we are waiting for is the 'Any column' search function, and of course the official release of v5. Any news on these 2 subjects?

'Any Column' search function.

Click 'Any' column header and a small menu pops up with sort/filter options.

We decided that clicking the column header for filtering was quicker that having a load of search boxes or a myriad of menu options to select columns.

The search box at the bottom of the window for part number and description was going to be removed but a few people wanted it back just because they'd got used to it being there.

Official release date?
You've got me there. To be honest we were just kind of hoping to silently slide from one version to the other without making any big announcement.

We respectfully completely disagree with your decision.

You have replaced a simple search box with a load of filters and a myriad of options to select from.
Removing the search box would have been a complete disaster.

So, the collective decision from our little user group is that we will wait for the 'Any column' search before upgrading.

On the other hand, having a silent slide over seems to be a brilliant idea :-)

@Thomas. Are you talking about the column header click/Menu? or the single search box at the bottom of the window?

So how would 'you' make an 'any column' search feature?
Would you have one box that searched for the given text in ALL columns?
Would you have one text input box for the search query and a list of (30+) checkboxes to define which columns to apply the search to?
Or would you have 30 little boxes? one for each column?

I would have exactly the same search function as in Outlook, when you search for emails.
Here i would have liked to add a snip of the Outlook search, but there does not seem to be an option to add images. Bottom line is that the Outlook search highlights the hits with yellow.

Just add the 'Any column' checkbox, and no more checkboxes. The 'Any column' checkbox makes all the rest of your suggested checkboxes redundant.

Advantages of adding the 'All column' checkbox:
For you:
New customers has a very easy learning curve when meeting your product for the very first time = more likely to buy.

For us:
When the daily grind runs at full throttle, we don't have to think so much about what exact column it was. We can just search, and get the search hits presented. Less time spent = more time for growth = more MiniMRP seats.
When introducing new employees to your system, the learning curve is very fast. Faster ROI = more MiniMRP seats.

I honestly believe that the 'Any column' search function is true to the MiniMRP concept.
And please don't get me wrong, the column filters are a good additional option, but cannot replace the 'Any column'.

Thanks for the honest and open dialogue. It is not something we are used to from other forums, so it actually reinforces our belief in your system.

So an idea would be an 'Any Column' checkbox and the software remembers that as the default so you don't have to check it each time.

That sounds good but it's one of those things that we'd need to do first before seeing how useful it really is.

To be honest I'm not sure I understand the problem you mentioned: Do you really "have to think so much about what exact column it was"

Surely you know, in advance, if you're searching for an Item by its part number or its vendor's name? Searching directly in that column is a quicker result. There's not a myriad of options, as you put it. Just a click. And the time taken to do that click is likely to result in a quicker search. Once you have the results you can then filter further on the same or other columns to reduce the results further.

Your idea of "Always" searching/filtering 30 columns does have a length of time for processing associated with it as well as the likelihood of getting more result rows that you wanted which then require another filter which then takes even longer.

I'm not writing off your idea. Just want to get our heads round it and maybe arrive at something slightly different but which still meets your, and everyone else's, requirements. As you said. Open dialog like this helps everyone.

Not sure if this is a new topic but can you please add filtering to PO's? We have hundreds and it would be very helpful if we could filter on PO number or Supplier at a minimum.

I put this into the suggestion box.
